# Run a holiday free gift

> Give a free gift on orders over an amount for a set holiday window, and let the store show shoppers how close they are.

**The goal:** a free gift for the holidays that turns on and off by
itself, and nudges shoppers to spend a little more to get it.

**What you build:** a [Free gift](https://backtrackhq.com/docs/promotions/free-gift/)
promotion with start and end dates. The gift unlocks when the cart
reaches an amount. AndOr adds it for the shopper, or the shopper picks
it in the [gift chooser](https://backtrackhq.com/docs/widgets/gift-chooser/).

## Before you start

- Add the gift product to your store first. A gift that is one product
  or one variant lets AndOr add it for the shopper.
- For the gift in the cart drawer, turn on the app embed. See
  [Turn on the app embed](https://backtrackhq.com/docs/get-started/install/#turn-on-the-app-embed).

## 1. Create the promotion and pick the gift

Open **Promotions**, click **Create promotion**, then click **Choose**
on the **Free gift** card. Set **Unlock the gift when the cart
reaches** and pick the gift under **Customer gets (Y)**.

## 2. Decide how shoppers get the gift

In the upsell offer, open **Gift settings**. Keep **Add the gift for
the shopper** on for a single gift product. For a choice of gifts, keep
**Let shoppers choose their gift** on.

## 3. Set the holiday dates

In **Schedule and status**, set the start and end dates of your
holiday window, then click **Make it live**. The promotion starts and
stops on those dates.

## 4. Add the gift slot to your cart

Under **What's next**, click **Open theme editor** and add the **AndOr
Offer picker** block to the cart page. Click **Save**.

## 5. Check it before the holiday starts

A draft or a promotion outside its dates shows nothing on your store.
To test early, save it as a draft and test at checkout with
the [test email](https://backtrackhq.com/docs/get-started/test-before-going-live/) from the rule's **Status** card, then set the real dates.
