Limits
On this page
Checkout rules run inside Shopify checkout, so Shopify sets some limits. This page lists them in one place. Each rule page also shows its own limits in the Limitations card.
If a rule seems to do nothing, a limit on this page is often the reason. Check here before you change the rule.
Which stores can use rules
- Rules work on all Shopify plans except Shopify Starter. You don’t need Shopify Plus, not even to hide express payment methods.
- A few conditions need Shopify Plus. See Conditions that need Shopify Plus.
Where rules don’t run
Shopify POS
Rules don’t run in Shopify POS. They only run in the online checkout.
Draft orders
The Limitations card says:
- “Payment rules don’t support draft orders.”
- “Shipping rules don’t support draft orders.”
- “Validation rules don’t support draft orders.”
- Discounts: “Draft order checkouts are not supported.”
What this means in Shopify:
| Rule type | While staff build the draft in the admin | When the shopper pays through the draft’s checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Payment and shipping | Not applied | Applied |
| Validation | Applied | Applied |
| Discount | Not applied | Not supported |
So “don’t support draft orders” on the card means the admin side. It does not mean the rule is ignored everywhere.
Inside Shop Pay
“Payment rules aren’t compatible with Shop Pay.” Inside Shop Pay, payment methods can’t be changed apart from gift cards.
What to do: test your payment rule in the normal checkout, not in Shop Pay.
Payment method limits
Logo methods can’t be renamed
“You can’t rename payment methods that have logos as a name.” For example Shop Pay, PayPal, Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and gift card.
What to do: hide the method instead, or rename only text-named methods.
Some logo methods can’t be moved
“Due to Shopify limitations, few logo based payment methods can’t be moved for example Shop Pay.” Reorder the other methods around them instead. Express and wallet methods can be hidden, but not reordered.
Shipping method limits
Local delivery and local pickup
Shipping rules can hide, rename and reorder local delivery and local pickup options too, for example with the Hide local pickup for international use case.
Reordering can change the selected rate
By default, the cheapest shipping option shows first and is pre-selected. Reordering can move it down.
What to do: after you save a reorder rule, check checkout once to see which rate is picked first.
Express checkout limits
- “For logged in customers this customization only work on their first order.”
- “Carts that do not require shipping is not compatible with this customization.”
- The two “(One-page checkout)” actions only work on one-page checkout, and need a manual payment method or shipping rate set up in Shopify. See Hide express checkout options.
Discount limits
- Product discounts: “Applies per cart line, not the order total.”
- Order discounts: “Applies to the entire order subtotal.”
- Combined and tiered rules: “Combining with other discounts follows the Combinations settings.”
- Tiered rewards: “Minimums use cart prices before any discount.” and “A cart line takes one product discount, so a bigger product discount can replace a free gift.”
- A discount code can be rejected only when the shopper enters it, using Discount code rejection on an automatic order discount. Rejecting a code by shipping method is not possible. See Example: block discount codes.
Conditions that need Shopify Plus
Two conditions are marked “(Plus required)”:
- Selected payment method (Plus required)
- Discount code or automatic discount (wildcard, Plus required)
They need checkout extensibility, which means Shopify Plus or a development store. They don’t match in accelerated checkouts such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.
How many rules you can run
- Your plan sets how many rules can be active. Drafts don’t count. See Plans and billing and Rule limit reached.
- Shopify allows at most 25 active functions of each type on a store. This number is shared with every app on the store. If other apps use some, fewer are left for AndOr.
Rule size
Shopify gives each rule up to 10 KB of settings at checkout. Long lists of addresses or values use the most space. The Rule size card shows how much of the 10 KB the rule uses. If you get close, split the list into two rules. You can’t save a rule that is over the limit. See Rule size.
Rule sets
Each rule set offers a different group of conditions, because of the Shopify Functions input size limit. If a condition you need is not in your rule set, pick another set, or make a second rule.
