Rule limit reached
Your plan allows a number of active rules. When you reach it, you can’t turn on more rules until you turn one off or upgrade. Drafts never count.
Why there is a limit
Each plan includes a set number of active rules. Bigger plans include more. Your rules keep working when you reach the limit. Only turning on one more is blocked.
What you see
On the Plan page and around the app, a banner says You’ve reached your Free plan rule limit (with your plan’s name). A line under it says how many active rules you use, out of how many. When the limit is per rule type, the banner names the type, for example your discount rule limit.
How to read it: the line reads “You’re using … of … active” and the rule type. When both numbers are the same, that type is full. Other rule types, like payment or shipping, may still have room.

On a promotion page you may see: “You reached your plan’s discount limit. Make it live won’t save until you upgrade. Save as draft still works.”
What counts
- Active rules count. Scheduled discounts count too.
- Draft and inactive rules don’t count. You can create unlimited draft rules to test.
- Promotions count as discount rules. Each promotion is one discount, so it uses one discount rule.
- Discounts made in Shopify or by other apps don’t count. Only AndOr rules count toward your AndOr plan limit.
The Limits stat on Home shows how many active rules your plan allows. Hover it for details.
Make room or upgrade
How to choose: if you have old or test rules turned on, turn them off first. It is free. If every active rule is in use, upgrade.
Pick one:
-
Turn off a rule you don’t need.
On Rules, select it and click Deactivate, or Set as draft. It stops running at checkout but is kept.
-
Save the new one as a draft.
Keep building and testing. Turn it on when you have room.
-
Upgrade your plan.
Click the upgrade link in the banner, or open Plan and click Manage subscription. See Plans and billing for each plan’s limits.
Shopify’s own limit
Shopify allows at most 25 active rules of each function type per store, for example 25 payment customizations. Other apps share this limit. If another app uses some of them, you can turn on fewer AndOr rules of that type, even on the biggest plan.
